It’s alive!

Monday, November 1st, 2010

My HobbyCNC Pro kit arrived the other day and several evenings later I had the steppers moving. My son (age 3) and I enjoyed watching the steppers move on the workbench as EMC thought it cut out the standard test image. I also made more progress on the CNC machine build. In spite of several layout errors I have the X and Y axis pretty much assembled. The X axis is mostly dialed in but there is a bit of slack in the end bearing. These bearings may end up getting replaced if I can not eliminate enough play. Sadly I broke a tap while fabricating my stepper coupler so I did not achieve CNC movement as hoped this weekend.

CNC router update

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Slowly but surely this project is nearing completion. This weekend I assembled the base and gantry. The remaining electronics and stepper motors have shipped and should arrive this week. There is still a lot of minor assembly and tweaking to be done but it is finally starting to look complete. My good camera was low on battery so I only have grainy phone pictures to share.

CNC router progress

I made some more progress on my CNC router project. Here are all the base pieces put together in a mock-up of what the final result will look like. The black pipes are what the gantry will ride on.

I have decided to build my CNC router based on a design by CNCzone.com forum user jgro.

CNC 007

Here is a pile of parts I have completed.

CNC 006

As you can see I am making a real mess in the garage.

CNC 003

Here are the bearing assemblies for all 3 axis. These are made from aluminum angle and skate bearings and will ride on black gas pipe to form a linear bearing.

Here is the back of the x-axis assembly, showing the parallel bearings.
